Follow-my-leader leads to close pass at traffic Island

Four cars overtake on approach to pinch point. Car 1 ok. Car 2 could do better. Car 3 left it way too late. Car 4 drives towards me at island then panics and slows to my speed increasing the time spent too close.
Classic convoy mentality.
